That Time Of Year

Posted on June 30, 2009 by Rick Schultze

Well it’s that time of year for graduations. For younger students at their first graduation to the older ones graduating from trade schools, career prep schools, culinary schools, high schools, colleges and the military academy’s, there is excitement in the air. It’s that time to look back at what you’ve done and look forward to the future at the same time.
No matter if it’s a student’s first graduation or that last one will they will have scholastically, it’s a big deal. Not only for the students, but also for their families and friends. We here on the Central Oregon Coast probably all know someone who is excited about graduating!

Theoretically those graduating from trade schools, career prep schools, colleges, the academy’s and some high schools, have become ready to enter the work force and take advantage of the knowledge they’ve acquired over their years of academic toil.

On one hand today’s graduate is facing a tougher than normal launch into the work place but according to many experts there are slots for those students that have excelled in a variety of studies or those who have learned a trade or skill which is applicable to today’s changing world. Those who have learned “green” trades like wind turbine skills, hydroelectric skills, working with solar energy and some aspects of landscaping, and of course good chefs are always in demand.

Also students who are proficient in education and the health field have good opportunities even though we hear about the reduction of teachers in some places because of wide ranging budget cuts. Nevertheless a diploma is a great thing to have.

Another aspect of graduating is the reflecting on the things students have shared with their fellow students. The social skills, the friendships which often last a lifetime, and the memories of “school days”. Even days that weren’t the best ones! Those days might not translate to a successful and lucrative life but they will never be forgotten!

Another interesting aspect of this time of year and graduations is the upcoming Major League Baseball draft which targets college and high school student athletes. Some of this group of students can stay in school until they graduate, or leave early and turn professional. Now this is a relatively tiny percentage of student athletes that will make the grade but with talent and the right scenario there are potential millionaires in the group. For them it’s been a great value to have stayed in school and keep up their grades giving them the opportunity to graduate or go pro.

However how you’ve done it, hats off to all you Grads, congratulations, you’ve done a great job and keep up the good work!
