For the Birds
When the weather allows it, one of my favorite things to do is to watch the bird population in action! I don’t watch the way The Audubon Bird Society group does, but as just a guy who lives on The Central Oregon Coast near the ocean, a market, a bay and a sough that attracts all kinds of birds as well as a mud puddle across the street that serves as the neighborhood community bath for birds does.
Because of the kind of environment here there are many species of Birds around here; Bald Eagles, Chickadees, Grosbeaks,Finches, Robins, and of course Crows and Seagulls. This variety of Birds provides hours of viewing entertainment and points out the pecking order of these winged beauties.
At the top of the ladder are The Eagles who really rule the sky’s. When the Eagle soars the rest of the birds give it all the space it wants! From there it works it’s way down to the smallest birds which stay out of the way of the bigger birds like the Crows and Seagulls.
The Crows , which annoy some folks, are really quite intelligent, in fact I saw a documentary that said they communicate with one another with a language that has sixty or so distinct calls.
And then there are the Seagulls which do drive a lot of people crazy. They are messy, loud and extremely mean to each other. Two Seagulls will fight over a piece of food while another Seagull will dive down and take the food away from the other two! However Seagulls provide a very necessary service; they clean up the garbage others leave behind. Trust me, with out Seagulls this part of the world wouldn’t smell very nice.
So hats off to the Winged population which help make The Central Oregon Coast a entertaining and wonderful place to live or visit!
